Instagram advertising: brand experience and effectiveness
Reclamele pe Instagram: experiență de brand și eficiență
Supervisor: Conf. univ. dr. Gerard Stan · Defended June 2021
An experiment, not a literature review. The question was whether a higher-clarity ad format lets an unknown brand compete with a known one on Instagram.
2×2 between-subjects. Two levels of ad clarity (video vs. static image) crossed with two levels of brand familiarity — a real brand (Armani) vs. one I invented (Gents). Four experimental conditions, random assignment.
246 started, 203 completed. Recruited through Instagram and Facebook Messenger; mobile-accessible questionnaire because the platform is mobile-first.
12 participants first to verify manipulations. 83% did not recognise the fake brand and 83% did recognise Armani. 92% found the video ad clearer than the image.
Seven-point semantic differential scales for brand familiarity and ad clarity. Then attitude toward the ad, attitude toward the brand, purchase intention, and a three-item social endorsement construct (post-as-yours, follow, tag-a-friend). Three demographics at the end.
MANOVA in SPSS for the main effects, then linear regression and a Sobel test for mediation via interest and involvement, following the Baron & Kenny procedure.
Seven, all stated in advance. Each accepted, partly accepted or rejected against the data.
Brand familiarity had a strong effect on brand attitude and purchase intention. Ad clarity did not carry across most measures, but video did produce significantly higher social endorsement than the static image. So the main hypothesis — that clarity levels the field for unknown brands — came out partly supported and mostly not. I wrote it up that way rather than forcing the result.

The role of music in the construction of advertisements
Rolul muzicii în construcția reclamelor
Supervisor: Conf. univ. dr. Gerard Stan · Submitted July 2018
A literature review and case study analysis of how background music changes what an ad does to the person watching it. Around 90 academic papers read and cited.
Theory first: types of television advertising, the three categories of background music used in ads, and musical fit theory. Then the literature analysed by effect — general consumer attitude to TV advertising, music's effect on mood, on brand attitude, on attention and memory, and how tempo, rhythm, tone and mode each shift the response. A section on the downsides of music in advertising, which most treatments skip.
Four ads taken apart: Nespresso — What Else? The Swap (2011), Dior — Miss Dior Chérie (2008), Kit Kat — Gimme a Break (1994), and Volkswagen — The Force (2011).
The evidence on music improving product recall is weaker than the field assumes; congruence between music and the rest of the ad matters more than the music itself; and gender differences in response are real and under-studied. The conclusion includes its own limitations and a list of research gaps worth filling.
Grounded in the primary literature: Gorn's 1982 classical conditioning study and Kellaris & Cox's failed replication, Alpert & Alpert on mood, Areni on classical music in wine retail, Oakes on musical fit, Yeoh & North on cross-cultural congruence, Bruner on music, mood and marketing.

What the two degrees actually taught
Beyond the coursework, what actually transferred into the work I do now.
🔬 Research methods that hold up
Questionnaire design, experimental manipulation and pre-testing, semantic differential scales, MANOVA, regression, mediation analysis, sample attrition handling. The master's dissertation is a properly specified experiment, not a survey with a chart on the end.
📚 Reading primary literature
Both theses are built on journal articles rather than textbooks, and both state where the evidence is thin rather than only where it supports the argument.
🎯 Brand + campaign work end to end
Rebranding, creative briefs, campaign objectives, audience definition, media planning, owned-channel audits, campaign teardowns.
🎨 Production, not just strategy
Visual identity manuals, photography, video and storyboarding, Photoshop, print materials, display ads, social templates and content calendars.
🌐 Two languages of the field
Romanian academic communication theory on one side, and the Anglo-American empirical advertising research tradition on the other, since almost all the source material was in English.
