ChatGPT Quietly Ships a 1.7 GB Office Suite

Simon Willison was cleaning up his disk with OmniDiskSweeper when he found something in ~/.cache/: the ChatGPT desktop app (formerly Codex) had installed 1.7 GB of runtime — a full Python install, full Node.js, git, Poppler, and 430 MB of headless LibreOffice. None of it announced anywhere in the app.

A nested documents folder inside that runtime ships skills that tell the agent how to find and operate those binaries. The working theory in the HN thread: it's reading and writing Word, Excel, and PowerPoint files on your machine without needing a cloud round-trip.

The functionality is reasonable. The surprise is that your IT team's ChatGPT install now assumes a 1.7 GB local toolchain — one that includes an office suite the company that built it never mentioned.
