Profound Aim ships. The AEO dashboard problem just got an agent.
- Profound launched Aim on July 2, 2026 — a background agent that detects shifts in AI search citations, diagnoses causes, and routes execution tasks to specialized agents without requiring a marketer to manage multiple workflows.
- 51% of B2B software buyers now start vendor research in an AI chatbot, up from 29% a year ago — which means the shortlist is being built in a system your ad pixel can't touch.
- Aim is currently enterprise-only with custom pricing, so most growth-stage SaaS teams need a cheaper proxy strategy now — and that approach is worth thinking through seriously.
On July 2, Profound announced Profound Aim, a background agent built for marketing teams that watches a brand's citation and sentiment across AI assistants like Claude and ChatGPT. When it detects a shift — say, a drop in brand citations — Aim surfaces likely causes, writes a memo, spins up a project with tasks tied to fixing the problem, and routes work to execution agents inside its own interface.
That's the product. But the problem it's solving is worth slowing down on.
The dashboard wasn't the finish line
Over the past year, AEO platforms built useful monitoring layers. You could see how ChatGPT talked about your brand, track citation share across Perplexity and Gemini, watch sentiment move. Profound's own platform was good at this. But monitoring didn't close the loop. Teams were overwhelmed by dashboards and signals but had no structured way to determine what deserved attention first.
Every week someone would export a visibility report, note that citation share in the "B2B returns software" cluster dropped 4 points, and then... open a Notion doc and start a discussion thread. Three days later, nothing had shipped.
Aim collapses that gap. According to Adweek, when Aim detects a shift, it diagnoses likely causes, writes a memo, and spins up a project with tasks tied to fixing the problem — without a marketer having to work across several workflows. Josh Blyskal, who leads special projects at Profound, described it as capable of orchestrating the full end-to-end marketing loop as a single conversational interface.
That framing matters. It's not another analytics dashboard with a chat window bolted on. It's an agent that treats the signal as the trigger for action, not just a number in a report.
Why the timing is right
G2's 2026 data puts 51% of B2B software buyers starting vendor research in an AI chatbot more often than Google — up from 29% in early 2025. In under a year, the front door to your software category moved. AI chatbots are now the single biggest influence on which vendors make a B2B software shortlist, cited by 54% of buyers, ahead of software review sites at 43% and vendor websites at 36%.
The shortlist gets assembled before your first sales touch. 6sense data shows 95% of winning vendors were already on the buyer's day-one list. If you're not in that list, you don't win the deal — you never even get the call.
And what goes into that AI-generated shortlist? Third-party credibility. Case studies. Analyst mentions. Peer citations. Honcho's research, published July 1, puts it plainly: 89% of citations for unbranded B2B questions come from third-party sources, not your own site. Your homepage is nearly irrelevant to the shortlisting step.
This is the structural problem Aim is trying to automate around. Track where citations are dropping, understand why, and trigger the content and PR work that repairs them — without the marketer acting as the connector between observation and execution.
The part worth pushing back on
Profound raised a $96M Series C in February 2026 at a $1B valuation. The pricing reflects it. There's no self-serve tier, no free trial. Every conversation starts with a sales call, and the full feature set — Prompt Volumes, the citation graph, Agents at scale — sits behind a procurement cycle. For a growth-stage B2B SaaS team running lean, the math doesn't work yet.
That's not a knock on the product. Profound is solving a real and expensive problem for enterprise marketing teams. But it does mean that most of the people reading this are watching the category from the outside right now.
The practical question for a team that can't get into Profound yet: what does a cheaper proxy look like?
A few things I'd wire up manually while waiting for this category to mature and come down-market. First, set up a scheduled Claude or ChatGPT prompt that runs weekly against your top 10 category queries and logs whether your brand gets cited, and in what context. You can do this in n8n with a webhook trigger and a Google Sheet output in under an hour. Second, treat G2 review recency as a citation signal — the platforms pull from it, and a stale review profile is a silent drag on your AI visibility. Third, watch your LinkedIn original post performance. LinkedIn's own research confirms the platform ranks as the most-cited domain for professional queries across major AI search engines, and 95% of those citations come from original posts, not reshares.
None of that replaces what Profound Aim is doing at the orchestration layer. But it's the version you can actually build this week, without a procurement cycle.
What the product category tells you
Agentic.ai's weekly tracker called it clearly: this launch shows vendors moving from analytics dashboards to agents that make decisions and organize action. The open question is how much of the execution stack Aim can actually run without human handoffs at scale.
That's the right question. But notice that the question has shifted. A year ago the debate in AEO was whether AI search citations were even trackable. Six months ago it was whether they were measurable in a meaningful way. Now the frontier is whether an agent can close the loop from signal to shipped content without a human project-managing every step.
The category matured fast. The gap between enterprise teams running Profound and everyone else running manual Claude prompts into a spreadsheet is going to narrow, but not yet. Aim is the clearest signal yet of where B2B marketing ops is heading. The enterprise gets it first.
